Last-gasp Somerset narrowly survive

Somerset seem to be making a habit of leaving their Premier Division survival until the last day of the season.

Last year they had to claim the points from an unplayed game against Southampton Rangers to ensure their survival, this year they lost to the same opponents, but were spared because Social Club failed to beat already-relegated Cleveland.

Social Club have gone from heroes to zeros in just one season, and will play First Division cricket next year, Somerset have survived, but only just. For Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson, who missed yesterday's game through injury, the over-riding feeling was of relief at having dodged another last-day bullet.

"It feels good to stay up," he said. "We were worried about Social Club early but at the end of the day you have to worry about yourselves. At the end of the day we have enough senior players to do the work that it wasn't a matter of me playing.

"Yes it hurts to lose (to Rangers), but although we weren't able to pull the game out, at the end of the day, the guys did a lot of hard work, and played hard."

Despite his side's rather lowly standing in the Premier Division, Robinson believes that his team can look back on a season that was more good than bad.

"The season for us was good. We had our ups and downs, but we stuck to the plan and stayed up," he said. "As a club you have to be consistent and stick together as a team."

If Somerset had been relegated then both Cup Match sides would be in the First Division next season, as it is St George's narrowly failed to win promotion yesterday, and Robinson couldn't help but have a dig at his rivals.

"At the end of the day it shows that Somerset are a more powerful club then St. George's, and they are still in the First Division," said Robinson.
