Church to hold 'Rich Person, Poor Person Dinner' tomorrow

An educational anti-poverty event called 'The Rich Person Poor Person Dinner' is to be held tomorrow.

Sponsored by The Peace and Social Justice Committee, of the Roman Catholic Church in Bermuda, the dinner aims to raise awareness about world poverty and anti-poverty initiatives.

"The dinner is an anti-poverty campaign dinner designed to bring people together to begin to look at how we can combat poverty in our community and in the world," said Joanne Wohlmuth, chairperson of the Peace and Social Justice Committee.

"We do not hope to accomplish everything, we just want to take the first step of a thousand miles to begin to look at social justice for the poor and what we can do to revise our systems or our systematic way of thinking and acting, that continues to keep the poor, poor," she added.

Guests at the event will be entered into a lottery for their dinner. They will not know until they receive their meal if they have been given a poor person's or a rich person's dinner.

"The dinner is not to emphasise the food that we eat but to instill upon us the need to support one another as we are reminded of our inextricable link; for, when one of us is hungry, all of us, although we eat large, also remain hungry," said Ms Wohlmuth.

Semi-formal dress is expected at the event and door prizes, raffles and giveaways will be held throughout the evening.

'The Rich Person Poor Person Dinner' will be held at St. Theresa's Hall, on Laffan Street, in Hamilton, on Friday. Tickets are $100 and according to Ms Wohlmuth there are 100 available.
