Local teens in Malaysia with Raleigh International

Thirteen young adults set off for Malaysia last month as part of a ten-week programme organised by Raleigh International.

The group has already started work in Borneo, where it is planned they will help build a kindergarten, install a gravity water feed system and work with Sun Bear Conservation Centre, a facility there.

The participants, aged 17-21, earned their spots on the trip through a series of team-building and fundraising activities.

"I can't wait to get out there," said Gere Scraders, one of the participants of the programme before leaving the Island. "I'm still a little worried about the planes, because of all the things I've heard. I'm also concerned about the snakes and leeches. I also hope I have fun and learn a lot."

Added another participant, Julian Akole: "I think it will make me realise how privileged I am to live in one of the richest, but smallest countries in the world. Hopefully I will be able to use my experience this summer to carry out my future, and lend much-needed advice to my peers."

Raleigh International has provided students with challenging, international expeditions for 25 years, and has been working in Sabah, North Borneo since 2003. More that 20 programmes have been held in the area, with participants working both in conservation areas and withing the local community.
