BCB go for safety first as storms approach

Hurricane Bill may have forced Bermuda Cricket Board to cancel this weekend's matches, but the Western Counties Association aren't backing down quite so easily, writes Josh Ball.

With the storm moving further away from the Island by the minute, the WCA are playing a waiting game when it comes to tomorrow's match between Southampton Rangers and Warwick Workman's Club.

If the expected storm fails to materialise, or is not as bad as some might fear, the Counties match will be the only game on the Island, because as well as cancelling this weekend's domestic schedule, the BCB have also abandoned plans for two one-day games against Uganda.

"Due to the adverse weathers conditions expected to arrive this weekend associated with Hurricane Bill, the Bermuda Cricket Board would like to announce changes to the remaining matches between Bermuda and Uganda," a board spokesman said in a statement.

"It has been decided to cancel Saturday and Sunday's 50 over games, while Monday's Twenty20 match will be changed to a 50 over game starting at 2:00pm.

"Also, all domestic cricket has been cancelled and games will be recorded as no result."

The Board's stance is in stark contrast to that of the Counties, who are holding out hope that some sort of game might be played tomorrow.

"We're playing it by ear," said Rangers president Randy Raynor.

"If the storm passes, then we should still be able to play some sort of game, depending on what the umpires say. Maybe a 30 overs a side, or a Twenty20 match.

"At the moment it's wait and see, but hopefully we'll get some kind of game in."
