St. David's poised to win title race in exciting finale

The calculators will be out at most grounds this weekend as the 50-over competition reaches an exciting conclusion in the race for the title in the Premier Division and the First Division.

St. David's are on course to claim their first league championship since 2001, and with a two point cushion between themselves and Southampton Rangers, a win over Police would see them claim the Premier Divison title.

However, Rangers are far from out of it as league rules state that if two teams finish tied on points, the title is decided by most wins, then head to head results, and finally run rate.

The Southampton club have a vastly superior run rate (1.962) to that of the Islanders (1.601), and if Rangers beat Somerset and St David's lose, then both sides will be level on points (22), wins (11) and head to head with each side having beaten the other this year. In that event it will be Rangers who are crowned champions.

And a Rangers win would have implications at the foot of the Premier Division as well, with Somerset and Social Club battling it out to avoid the drop.

Somerset are currently in the driving seat with 11 points to Social Club's nine, but if the West End side lose to Rangers and the city club beat already relegated Cleveland then Somerset go down.

Although the two sides would finish level on points, Social Club would have five to Somerset's four. Such an outcome would be slightly unfair on Somerset however, as they have had three games rained out, while their rivals lost just one game to bad weather.

Things are only slightly less complicated in the First Division, where the smart money would seem to suggest that Devonshire Rec will make an immediate return to the top flight as champions. Although they are currently second on 21points, a point behind Willow Cuts, they have a game in hand on their rivals, against Warwick tomorrow.

Given that Warwick have played 12 games and lost all 12 so far this season, only a major upset would prevent Rec from claiming the league title. The race for second place also seems decided.

While St. George's could finish level on points with Willow Cuts, and with the same number of wins, and level on head to head, they are so far behind on run rate that even a huge victory over Somerset Bridge tomorrow is unlikely to be enough.

To have any chance of overhauling Cuts (1.918RR), St George's (1.614RR) would have to win the toss, bat first, score 300 plus and then bowl out Bridge for less than 70. In the event that they bowl first, St. George's would have to dismiss their opponents for around 50, and then knock off the runs in roughly three overs.
