Tourist fined $1,500 for importing marijuana
A tourist was fined $1,500 in Magistrates' Court after he admitted bringing marijuana cigarettes into the Island.
Robert Taylor apologised to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner for the crime.
The 52-year-old arrived in Bermuda on a commercial flight from the United States last Sunday, Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told the court.
After clearing Immigration the self-employed builder, proceeded to the Customs area of L.F. Wade International Airport where he picked up his single checked bag from the conveyer belt.
Ms Burgess told the court Taylor entered in line for the final Customs check when he was selected for a secondary inspection.
Taylor complied and was taken into a separate room where his checked and carry-on luggage were thoroughly searched.
Upon opening Taylor's toiletry bag the officer noticed what appeared to be two hand-rolled cigarettes containing plantlike material.
When he discovered the cigarettes the officer said: "I suspect that these contain marijuana."
In response Taylor replied: "I suspect they do too."
The contents of the cigarettes were later examined by a Government analyst who found they contained .56 grams of marijuana.
