Kitchen porter fined, banned for impaired driving
A man caught driving drunk first thing in the morning told Police he'd been drinking the night before.
Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told Magistrates' Court that Police spotted a Suzuki car being driven erratically along Malabar Road in Sandys at 9.30 a.m. on August 18 2009.
Noting that the driver was keeping the car very close to the sidewalk and swerving from side to side, the officers followed the vehicle and signalled for it to stop on West Side Road.
When 22-year-old Stefan Durrant got out, they noted that his eyes were glazed and his speech was slurred.
He claimed this was because he was tired, but asked if he'd been drinking, he replied: "Last night, but I haven't had a drink since two o'clock."
He was arrested and cautioned and agreed to take a breath test which he failed.
Durrant told the Police he'd left his driving licence at home, but it was later established that he did not have one.
Durrant, a kitchen porter at the 9 Beaches resort, admitted impaired driving and driving without a licence and apologised for his actions.
He was supposed to come to court on August 25 2009 but told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner he'd forgotten.
Mr. Warner meted out $1,100 in fines, 17 demerit points and a 12-month driving ban.
