Police get approval for Govt. Quarry telecommunications tower replacement
The Bermuda Police Service is to install a new telecommunications tower at the Government Quarry.
The 200-foot tower exceeds the old one by 20 feet and will "allow for more collocation of telecommunications facilities in the future", according to the Development Applications Board (DAB).
It is the fourth of six telecommunications towers being replaced by the BPS. In the past two years, facilities at Alton Hill, St. George's and Warwick Camp, have also been upgraded.
The new tower will be installed at the Ministry of Works and Engineering's depot site in Hamilton, and will include an equipment building, generator pad and eight-foot chain link security fence. Once installed, the communications equipment on the old tower was to be transferred over and the tower then decommissioned. This includes CellularOne and Digicel cellular antennae equipment.
A DAB report states: "The current tower requires replacement and upgrading due to weather damage, normal wear and tear, and to improve existing telecommunications."
Planning permission has now been approved. Beacon lights will be installed in compliance with the Department of Airport Operations.
