A Pembroke man spent the night in custody after he ran from plain clothes Police officers.

Dahlano Simons, 22, of Fenton Drive, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court on Friday to obstructing an officer.

Crown counsel Nicole Smith said the officers were on patrol in an unmarked car when they saw two men on a motorcycle committing minor traffic offences.

The officers followed the vehicle onto Princess Street and pulled in front of the motorcycle.

The pillion passenger got off the bike but Simons, who was driving the vehicle, attempted to turn around, colliding with the Police vehicle in the process.

He then turned and ran onto Dundonald Street and hopped over a wall onto Court Street while an officer chased him, shouting at him to stop.

Simons was later found hiding in a clump of trees behind a building.

In court, Simons said he ran because he was afraid the officers might have been gang members.

"They never tried pulling me over or nothing," he said. "They really said nothing to us.

"They never said they were Police. It was a random car pulling up on us, and I got scared. I don't know who I thought they were, probably some gang-affiliated people."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Simons $200.
