New coach Moore 'encouraged'

New coach David Moore got a chance to see his side in action for the first time yesterday and was generally encouraged by what he saw.

The Australian was full of praise for his team's batting performance against a Sinoville Invitational XI, singling out centurion Stephen Outerbridge as a player 'who can take this team forward in the future'.

It wasn't all positive, however, with Moore concerned about the discipline his side showed in the field and at the crease.

Overall though, Moore was happy to get his tenure off to a winning start and sees enough in the squad to think that the future is a bright one.

"I think all in all we had a pretty good day today, certainly our batting is very encouraging," said Moore.

"We've got a lot to work with, with all the batsmen we saw today, and Outerbridge's hundred was a really good, measured knock, and showed the maturity of a bloke who can take this team forward in the future.

"What we have to do with our batting is measure our innings a little bit, we did a great job to get a way to a flyer but in four-day games we need to measure our batting a little bit more and bat for whole days, particularly on good wickets like we saw today."

Moore was slightly more concerned by the bowling which saw all the bowlers, bar Malachi Jones and Rodney Trott, struggle with their line and length at times.

"With the bowling I think we need to be a little bit more disciplined, our lines and lengths, particularly in the closing overs and our discipline in the field, knowing what to do and where to go is something we really need to work on.

"But I'm really encouraged by the group of players we have got here, they are very keen and enthusiastic, they want to play for Bermuda, they have committed to the task and until they show me they are not committed they'll continue to be picked."

For the bowlers yesterday was all about fighting for a spot in the four-day game against Namibia, and with another practice game tomorrow, Moore said no-one was guarranted a place.

"I think there are some ideas at the moment, but I think it's pretty open, we've got six seamers, and each of those guys is well and truly in the mix," he said.

"No-one has really grabbed it and said this is my spot, so six guys fighting for four or three spots, is pretty good for us, and they are well aware of that situation."
