Winning start for Manders

Gavin Manders got his 2010 tennis season off to a winning start as he won an inter-school tennis tournament at Ball State University.

The tournament consisted of 16 players, with a double elimination format and each match lasting one set.

Manders, who won all five matches he played in to win the title, took the tournament to get a head start on the upcoming tournaments on his busy schedule including Davis Cup and the CAC Games.

"I used this tournament to tune up my game as it was difficult to get on the court with the snow making court time limited," said Manders. "The competition was descent but compared to Davis Cup it really doesn't compare.

"It feels good to continue my undefeated run, but I just used it to get me ready mentally for the summer season in Bermuda.

"I won every match I played 6-0, the guy I played in the finals was probably the hardest but I just feel that after a year like last year, the tournament players didn't know what hit them.

"I'm looking to get a week of training in before the summer season in Bermuda with the generous contribution the Premier gave me, also would like to thank him again as it is much needed.

Manders will also be back home hopefully as a coach at either Port Royal or Elbow Beach, something that will also help him get his hours on the court up.

"I'm just preparing for Davis Cup and CAC Games so I can represent Bermuda to the best of my ability. I look to come home this summer and work. Coaching will allow me to have the time to get my training in and still use my skills to make a contribution to tennis in Bermuda.

"I have a lot of tennis experience, and not only want to be a great player but also a great coach."
