Manders ends season undefeated
Gavin Manders has finished the season unbeaten and Bermuda Lawn and Tennis Association's (BLTA) undisputed number one after a historic campaign, both internationally and domestically.
The last rankings of the season saw Manders shake off rival Andy Bray to lay claim to the number one spot, which the pair shared for much of the year.
Having already won the Island Construction and Argus Open titles, Manders capped off a memorable summer by adding the WER Joell Memorial title to his trophy case.
Manders will now look to continue his rich vein of form the next season, while still studying abroad.
"It feels pretty good to be number one, something I thought in my mind I had achieved last year," said Manders.
"I knew I had more work to do to prove it to everybody else.
"But like I've said in the past, the test is not getting to the top, it's staying there so I'm focused and will do everything in my power to do what it takes to stay on top. I never doubted myself throughout the season but I was ready for the possibility of injury as it has hindered me in the past.
"So I'm very thankful that I was able to go through a full season without any injuries, something I struggled with last year.
"I have to thank my coach Sam Maybury for keeping me focused on the task at hand, and that's being the best I can on the court and off the court.
The 23-year-old also went undefeated in his four singles matches in March when Bermuda finished their Group IV Davis Cup group 6-1 - an unprecedented overall record for a Bermuda player. His one defeat of the season came in a doubles match.
Manders' immediate priority has now turned to his academic studies but he's adamant he will still remain focused on taking his game to the next level.
"The next step for me is training even harder and staying focused on my studies in West Palm Beach.
"I'm more focused then ever and will take my training to the next level on and off the court.
"My goal is to try and win a match in Division III next year and I have started training for it already so I have a early start.
"I'm also focused on continuing my dominance on the local scene as well.
"I have a long way to go before I'm even close to the type of dominance Ricky (Mallory) showed while he was at the top.
"I'm not playing for my school but I do off court training on my own and I train at a country club out here with a couple players who used to play on tour."
Following Manders in the rankings are Jenson Bascome, who overtook Bray as number two, followed by Bray. Jacob Trott and David Thomas round out the top five.
Ashley Brookes held onto her Ladies' number one ranking, with the Lambert sisters, Jackie and Tara, hot on her heels at two and three respectively.
Ciara Svensen and Sasha Fisher round out the top five.
