Logie full of praise for young team

Gus Logie has been impressed with his side's fielding against Canada during the One Day International Series.

Gus Logie believes his young side will have won over a few of the doubters after they produced two 'over-whelming' performances to beat Canada over the weekend.

The Bermuda coach was full of praise for his side's display which he said showed 'intensity, maturity, and a desire not seen for quite some time'.

And Logie believes the best is yet to come from a team that overcame some high pressure situations to win the three-match One Day International series on Sunday.

"I'm very pleased for the youngsters in the side," he said. "It was a tremendous team effort and the intensity they showed was outstanding.

"We came in a bit short of match practice, but the way they prepared over the last two days, the determination they showed, the whole team worked really well.

"You can always sense what a side is capable of in the build up to a game by their intensity and input in training, the effort. We asked for effort and the response was overwhelming.

"They all showed a really mature approach to the game, they all thought about it, all worked hard on it, and all wanted to be involved all the time. They were thinking about what was going on and all worked hard as a team."

For Logie the way the younger members of the squad performed was vindication for taking a team that featured just three players from the World Cup. But it was his side's fielding, so often a weakness that drew the most effusive praise.

"The youngsters stepped up to the plate, guys like Jekon Edness, Rodney Trott, and Stefan Outerbridge all contributed to a good total in the second game, and in the first Chris Foggo batted well and was well supported by the others," said Logie.

"The bowling unit of George O'Brien, Ryan Steede, as well asthe spinners really came to the fore and the fielding was very impressive.

"I haven't seen fielding that good for quite some time," he said.

"We had five run outs in two games, and a lot of that was to do with the captain (Irving Romaine), and the intensity that he brought to the team, but it also shows you what young legs can do when they are motivated and want to perform.

"The guys are all really excited at the moment, there's a great feel about the squad, they have learned some respect for themselves, but also earned a lot of respect from the opposition and from the fans who came over to watch. They were really impressed by the intensity that was shown. The results are just a great credit to the whole team.

"We were under pressure in both games, and we came through it, and we will learn a lot from the experience. But this is still a work in progress, and there is more work to do."

The build up to this tour has not been particularly smooth for Logie or his side. From the much-publicised disagreements with older members of the squad, to a lack of proper practice facilities, everything it seemed was going against the squad.

"Despite of everything that has gone before, results like this make it seem worth it," said Logie.

"But it shouldn't be like that. The athletes should get all the support that they can, and they deserve that much.

"We are going to come up against better teams than this, and we can't expect to win all the time. It's not fair to the athletes that they should have to fight against the odds to produce results like this. And we won't be able to develop if we don't get that support."
