Estwanik and Trott claim local honours

Ashley Estwanik and Sean Trott were crowned the local 10K champions on Saturday after romping home ahead of the rest of the Bermuda field.

Overall the pair placed 29th and sixth.

Estwanik added her 10K victory, which she ran in a time of 40 minutes, 12 seconds, to her Front Street Mile triumph from the previous night.

She also competed in the Triangle Challenge with her last race of the weekend being yesterday's Half-Marathon

While admitting that her time could have been a bit faster, she was pleased to be back pounding the pavement after having a baby last year and said she was proud of husband, Chris, who was the second local runner despite pushing the baby along the course.

"It felt really good to be back out there after last year when I did compete but was pregnant so I didn't give it my all," said Estwanik. "I would have liked my time to have been a little bit faster but I have to save myself for tomorrow's race (Half-Marathon).

"But it was a really nice out there, perfect conditions with plenty of people cheering us on and it was great to get the tremendous support from the fans which is a common thing here.

"I knew Victoria (Fiddick) wasn't running because she is running tomorrow but I wasn't sure how Jenny (Alen) was going to do and like I said I'm not in my best shape but it was great.

"He (husband Chris) decided that he wanted to push the baby jogger and that was great because he said this weekend is your time to do whatever and go out and compete.

"He is obviously in good shape if he came second place with the baby jogger, and I know as I do most of my runs with the jogger."

Alen placed second in a time of 40:48 and 34th overall while Andrea Banks finished in a time of 43:06 to take third place locally and 59th overall.

One of Bermuda's most promising up and coming runners, Trott, was also pleased with his performance, although the youngster didn't expect the hills to have such a major bearing on his performance, covering the distance in a time of 34 minutes, seven seconds.

"I was aiming to hit 5:15 early on (first mile) and try to hit that throughout the race but those hills were a bit harder than I thought," said Trott. "In the end I am pleased with my performance.

"I've been doing a lot of mileage, running and strength work such as 10-mile runs pretty much every day to get myself prepared for the longer version of running.

"Also, mile repeats with little stops in between to build up my endurance.

"It was a good way to finish the weekend since I'm not running tomorrow."

Chris Estwanik, baby carriage and all, finished second locally and eighth overall in a time of 34:27 with Tony Banks rounding off the top three locally in a time of 35:58 and placing 11th overall.
