Dreaming of trust
June 20, 2009
Dear Sir,
As we prayed together on the grounds of Parliament the other day, I saw around me many Bermudians from all backgrounds, coming together over honesty, kindness and values. As we joined hands, I thought about a dream. What if we had a new party in Bermuda? What if Janice Battersbee was the spokesperson? What if we called it the TRUST party? What if it was based on Transparency, Responsibility, Unity, Strength, and Truth? What would happen then?

Apology not acceptable
June 20, 2009
Dear Sir,
It is with no satisfaction that Dr. Brown was forced to give an apology to his Cabinet and to the people of Bermuda in order for him to survive a vote of "No Confidence".
The apology should not be considered acceptable, for it was a deceitful, disguised apology for disrespect and offending, that was the very least of his offences. What he should have been made to apologise for was his Constitutional deceit, chicanery, and a total disregard for our Democracy.
His threat under these dire times made him invoke what I call a Constitutional Whip, and threaten his ministers with banishment if they did not support him; he knew that and banked on that.
Be patient. As I have always said, People Power in time will have its way. History has taught us that, and history was being made yesterday, and in time, history will have its way again.
I only wish that the doubtful had banded together to oust Dr. Brown and succeeded, then he would not have had the power to banish anyone, he would have been the one to be banished. All we want is the same horse but a different jockey.

A banana republic
June 20, 2009
Dear Sir,
I fear that, not to use plantation speak, Bermuda is slowly turning into a banana republic. From the GlobalHue non-tender, to expensive visits away, the Uighurs and the constant "I'll do what I darn well want", Dr. Brown is creating a silly, backward island. And now, here comes Sharpton ... not to praise anything humanitarian but to help celebrate "one against" the colonial powers. Bermuda is losing credibility and is stagnating in its own racial naval gazing.

Complacency has ended
June 21, 2009
Dear Sir,
Whilst the latest antics of our peerless Premier are truly outrageous, I have to note that they have brought to an end the general sense of apathetic complacency borne, of late, by our citizens. For many people, this is the first time they have brought forth their viewpoint from the safety of their homes, and I only wish to make one comment: For anyone to have an ear, they must first have a voice.

Sick to my stomach
June 22, 2009
Dear Sir,
I had to read it twice to believe my eyes ... status ... to four Chinese Uighurs who have never stepped foot in Bermuda? Reuters reports the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Qin Gang, as saying "China opposes any third country accepting these suspects". So, barring any deal struck with the US, what would prompt Dr. Ewart Brown and Sen. David Burch to take on a mighty country like China and to be so kind and mightily generous offering these four men a home, a job, and security in tiny 21-square mile Bermuda where we can't even give status to our own?
Is Bermuda now a puppet on the string of a nation who can't accept even one of these immigrants for their own? How much money was Bermuda offered, Uncle Ewart? This should be disclosed to the public. Palau was offered $117 million for 17 detainees. Does this mean you get to pocket $28 million for 4? Or was this a deal of "you scratch my back, I'll leave your international businesses alone"? I am disgusted and sick to my stomach with what Bermuda has become.
I have lived in Bermuda for 25 years. I was born here and I have been fighting for over 13 years (spending my savings in legal fees) just trying to get some justice out of the government only to hear they are now giving away what belongs to others! How dare you not have considered the ramifications of this offer and understood the plight of your own people first! You speak of "unjust international human rights"! If, as you claim, "it is the right thing to do", Ewart ... please look at the plight of your own people!
