Daniels fires 77 at US Amateurs

Bermuda golfer Terence Daniels carded a five-over par 77 at the US Amateur Championships yesterday.

Daniels' second round score left him 13-over par for the tournament following his first round of 80.

Playing the Chambers Bay course in Dupont, Washington, Daniels picked up birdies at the par-three 15, and the mammoth 607-yard, par five eighth. However, he also recorded five bogeys and a double-bogey to finish tied in 250th place.

n Daniel Augustus overpowered Port Royal Golf Course and outclassed the rest of the field to win this week's Jack Daniels Tour event.

Augustus hit 15 of 18 greens in tough, windy conditions en route to a one-over-par 72, which included a triple bogey.

For Augustus the birdies began early as he picked up strokes on the second hole, the sixth, seventh and eighth to make the turn at an impressive three-under 33.

His only bogey on the front nine was at the par three eighth where he missed a three-foot putt.

His closest competitor on the front was Quinton Sherlock who was at one-over 37, four shots adrift of Augustus.

Augustus kept up his steady play on the back nine despite strong winds and his first mistake did not come until the long par-three 16th where his tee shot into the right rough. And despite four people searching for his ball in a 20-yard area, it was never found.

He was forced to return to the tee and eventually carded a three-over six.

Clearly frustrated, Augustus was unable to take advantage of his length to birdie the par five 17th and three putted 18 to take his round to over par.

His nearest rival was Port Royal head professional Dwayne Pearman, four shots back at four-under 76. Keith Smith was third on 78, seven over.

Next week's event will be the fifth series event with $2250 up for grabs.

The competition for the 'Race to Gosling's Invitational' is hotting up with Scott Roy maintaining a slim lead and all the leading players expected to be on the Island to compete in that tournament.
