Community problem-solving at heart of three-day conference
Community problems will be the focus of a Government conference starting today.
The Department of Court Services, the Ministry of Culture and Social Rehabilitation and a handful of partnering agencies, will host the event at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, February 16 -18.
According to a spokesperson the conference's theme, 'Bridging the Gap', reflects the Ministry's motto 'Building Bridges to Success by Developing Human Potential'.
The event is intended to lay a foundation for linking services and the public and private sectors, in an effort to address problems in the community.
Said the spokesperson: "One of the aims of the conference is to build on (the) skills of and to further empower professionals through exposure to best practices and current research and trends in the field, and to assist individuals, families and the community in moving toward healing and self-sufficiency. As you are aware, the Government is embracing greater focus on our youth and families."
Several workshops will be held. Presenters include members and affiliates of the National Drug Court Institute and experts who will share their knowledge. Mental health treatment courts, co-occurring disorders, working with methamphetamine users, gambling addiction and working with schools (to solve the drug problem) are among the topics to be discussed. There will also be a session on avoiding burnout, to assist professionals.
Registration is $50, and includes materials and lunch each day. For more information telephone Antoinette Burgess on 294-3050 or send an e-mail, adburgess@gov.bm
