Sen. Thaao Dill: The Opposition is 'making stuff up' about FutureCare

Sen. Thaao Dill pauses after a discussion about pensions at the Senate meeting.

Government Senator Thaao Dill said he believed seniors were being scared and misinformed by "folks making stuff up" about the Government's FutureCare health plan.

He was asked to "clean up" his language, which inferred people were lying about the plan, in the Senate yesterday.

Although Sen. Dill never named Opposition MP Louise Jackson, who has spoken out many times about the scheme, members of the Senate referred to her in comments during the final debate yesterday.

Last night she said she felt Sen. Dill's comments marked "an all-time low" for Government and felt it was an attack against herself and other seniors.

While explaining the benefits package, and why he believed the $600 monthly premium was a fair price, in the Upper Chamber Sen. Dill said: "Folks are making stuff up to scare people so they can win political points."

Later he stated: "It's either accidentally foolish or intentionally disingenuous to suggest that this plan's inappropriately expensive," he said. Accordingly, anyone taking a position along those lines is not telling you the truth, and their point of view should be kept in the appropriate context."

He added that the fact FutureCare came in on budget in 2009 proved it had succeeded in balancing the needs of seniors and the Country's budget constraints.

"Any suggestion to the contrary, that this was not paid or planned for properly is simply an intentional lie and should be treated as such," he said. "That is, dismissed."

He ended his speech by stating: "When it comes to our elders, frightening them into thinking their basic health care options are either non-existent or insufficient is simply intolerable. To make it very plain, I trust my [Senate] colleagues and beyond will stop. Just stop. It's wrong, on every imaginable level."

In the final motion of the day Opposition Senator Jeanne Atherden brought FutureCare back up when she stated the only reason phase one of FutureCare came in on budget was because "not as many people took it up as was supposed to".

She said promises were often made as election ploys without being properly researched and they usually came back "to bite you in the butt".

She added that phase two would not offer the same benefits as phase one of FutureCare, something Sen. Dill denied. Government, she added, should answer the questions rather than accuse those asking of lying.

Sen. Dill said: "There is a very distinct and obvious difference between asking a question and making an assertion and assertions have been made about FutureCare that have been patently untrue."

At that point, Opposition Senate leader Michael Dunkley suggested Sen. Dill had used inappropriate language to criticise Shadow Health Minister Louise Jackson and that she wasn't there to be able to respond.

Senate President Carol Ann Bassett told Sen. Dill: "Clean it up a little bit because I wouldn't want to be called a liar." She said seniors would appreciate hearing about FutureCare, rather than such criticism. "You would serve them better doing that," she told him.

Sen. Dill said: 'I do realise the language I have used is impolitic but I do challenge anyone to suggest that I have been incorrect."

Sen. Dunkley said Mrs. Jackson had been a "tireless advocate of seniors". "I don't think she does anything intentional to cause any harm to seniors," he said. "I think she fights for them tooth and nail."

Government senator Marc Bean claimed Mrs. Jackson had "not once" contacted the Ministry of Health or visited there in person to get the correct information.

UBP senator Suzann Roberts Holshouser said she had never known Mrs. Jackson to "misrepresent the truth as she understands it".

"I can also confirm that I do know that she met with the previous Minister of Health who is no longer here."

Last night Mrs. Jackson said she has never made a statement about FutureCare without first checking with senior civil servants or the Health Minister about the facts.

When asked about Sen. Dill's statements she said: "This Government has reached an all-time low.

"This is not just an attack on me but on all seniors who are just trying to understand FutureCare. I am not alone on this stand, just listen to the talk shows."
