Willow Cuts' youngster is out to prove he has skills to succeed

Young and hungry: Seamer Kevon Fubler warms up for Bermuda's Intercontinental Shield match at the National Sports Centre yesterday.

Willow Cuts teenager Kevon Fubler is out to prove he can hold his own at the international level after being named as the youngest player in Bermuda's new-look squad.

Fubler, who has toured with the senior national team to Argentina but did not play, has been in fine form with the ball for Cuts this season and claimed seven wickets for an incredible six runs against Flatts a fortnight ago.

He was one of a number of promising players to be included in Gus Logie's 13-man squad with fresh faces Jordan DeSilva, Terryn Fray and Justin Pitcher replacing old guards Dwayne Leverock, Janeiro Tucker and Lionel Cann.

Although Fubler has also performed consistently at the Under-19 level, he said yesterday he had not expected to be called up for Bermuda's Intercontinental Shield match against Uganda.

"It was a surprise to be selected to the senior squad," said Fubler.

"I hope we get a good result in my first game at this level and will prepare myself to be fully ready if called upon."

The confident seamer, who took three for 28 against Leg Trappers last weekend, is relishing the prospect of playing alongside seasoned campaigners like Irving Romaine and Stephen Outerbridge.

"It's a good feeling to be around the squad." he said.

"It's good to have the older players around, the ones I look up to.

"I really look up to players like Stephen Outerbridge and Irving Romaine.

"Hopefully I can get the nod from the coach to be in the squad come Monday.

"I will be looking to get eight wickets and make a few useful runs with the bat.

"I feel real comfortable right now, not too nervous about what is being put upon me because I travelled with the senior side to Argentina a little while back and got to experience what it was like at this level.

"I believe we are well prepared and if called upon I will be ready."

After the four-day game, which starts next Monday, Bermuda and Uganda clash in 50-over matches on August 22 and August 23 and finally in a Twenty/20 game on August 24.

They will be led for the first time by David Hemp who has replaced Romaine as Bermuda skipper.

With a Bermuda team shorn of several seasoned players, the experience that Hemp and Romaine bring to the squad will be vital.

Romaine has already admitted that the captaincy was hindering his own performance, and coach Gus Logie said Hemp was the ideal choice to lead the team.

"He (Hemp) brings a lot of professionalism and leadership skills which hopefully he can pass on to the younger guys," said Logie.

"His whole approach to the game is excellent as well as the organisational skills that he brings."

Hemp, and his young charges will have to be on top of their game against Uganda, with Logie warning his side not to read too much into their win over the team at the World Cup qualifiers in April.

"They are a hardworking team and very aggressive in the field," he said. "They will give you a run for your money.

"They're new to the four-day game, but we know what they can do in the shorter version.

"Playing at home should be an advantage for us, and we need to make the most of that."

Bermuda squad: David Hemp (captain); Stephen Outerbridge (vice-captain); Irving Romaine; Chris Douglas; Terryn Fray; Rodney Trott; Tamauri Tucker; Jekon Edness; Fiqre Crockwell; Justin Pitcher; Malachi Jones; Jordan DeSilva; Kevon Fubler.
