Time to give youth a chance, says Fray

New-boy Terryn Fray believes Bermuda are in the dawn of a new era and has backed the decision to blood young talent against Uganda.

The Under-19 skipper was one of a number of promising players to be included in Gus Logie's 13-man squad with fresh faces Jordan DeSilva, Kevon Fubler and Justin Pitcher replacing old guards Dwayne Leverock, Janeiro Tucker and Lionel Cann.

But Fray still reckons there's sufficient experience in the camp in the form of new captain David Hemp, Stephen Outerbridge and Irving Romaine to help guide the international rookies.

"I figured it (the call-up) would come soon given that I've reached the end of my Under-19 career," said the Bailey's Bay opening batsman. "It's a good time to bring up a few of the younger guys, especially if they come with people they have already played with.

"But it's also good to have seniors in the squad as well to give us the guidance and maturity to reach our peak. The expectations are going to be high."

The match against Uganda will be visitors' first ever four-day game with many expecting it to be a straightforward win for Bermuda.

However, things have changed for the Islanders since their disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign in South Africa in April, with the appointment of a new captain and vice captain as well as key players retiring.

However, Fray doesn't feel that things will alter too drastically, other than perhaps their match strategy.

"We're playing Uganda and everyone is probably saying we should beat them with this being their first four-day game, so we will be looking to perform in our own country.

"I believe that we still have harmony in the squad. The senior players seemed happy in training today and were assisting the younger guys with our daily things. Everyone was just enjoying each other's company.

"It's a good sign with the appointment of a new skipper and vice-captain. Some things may change with the appointments but the unity will remain the same within the squad.

"We've a lot of faith in each other to get the job done, whether it be batting or bowling, so we should be okay for the future."

Having scored one ton and four half-centuries for Bay this season, Fray is looking to carry over his form into what would be his international debut.

"In the domestic league I've reached most of my goals, which were mainly to be consistent," he said.

"I've been amongst the runs all season, scored four half-centuries and a century in the league for Bay, so I will be looking to continue this in the international arena."

After the four-day game, which starts next Monday, the teams clash again in 50-over matches on August 22 and August 23 and finally in a Twenty/20 game on August 24.

All matches are being played at the National Sports Centre.
