Drum-Line campers to perform

Drum-Line Camp 2009 workshop participants will perform both on the steps of City Hall and at the Berkeley Institute Cafetorium tonight.

The Drum-Line Camp 2009 at the Berkeley Institute Music Department has been going on all week at the school.

This camp was an intense four-day drum-line camp, which will culminate in two public performances today.

On the steps of City Hall at 12.15, while the other will be at the Berkeley School Cafeterium in association with the Youth Forum Programme, which is under the leadership of Mr. Gladstone Thompson, at 6 p.m.

The performance, which starts at 6.45 p.m, is also free.

In addition, on April 16, they will perform at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts, during a prelude to Spring into the Arts at 7 p.m.

Clifford Wesley, who is a world-renowned drum-line instructor, is directing the Drum-Line Camp 2009.

He has directed camps throughout New Jersey, California and Texas, explained Chris Darrell, a teacher at the Berkeley Institute.

"Mr. Wesley has brought a high standard of excellence and proficiency to this endeavour," said Mr. Darrell.

"His accomplishments include, endorsing his own drumstick line and he has numerous solo's featured on www.youtube.com.

"He was also extremely instrumental in helping to establish the 'Drum-Line Bermuda' event, which was held in 2006."

Each day has been divided into two sessions, one beginning at 10 a.m., another that began at 1 p.m. while the advanced session has been taking place at 8 a.m.

"The purpose of this camp is to instill a healthy discipline, focus and an "I can" attitude through the medium of music," Mr. Darrell said of the week.

"This camp was geared toward student's ages of 14 to 18, but was open to all young people ages eight and up, and it has proved to be an ultimately enriching experience.

"Participants have learned cool new cadences and ways to improve on sticking technique. "There was also be a chance to perform publicly and to rub shoulders with some of the best drummers here on the island."
