Digicel gets network up and running in Haitian capital

Bermuda-domiciled telecommunications company Digicel says it network is now functioning well in the Hatian capital of Port-au-Prince with increasing numbers of customers connecting to it.

The company says coverage outside the city, which was devatstated by an earthquake last Tuesday, is good.

Digicel has given each of its two million plus customers in Haiti $5 of free call credit to help them to stay in contact with friends and family during this difficult time.

The company deployed a team of technicians to Haiti following the earthquake and has been working to restore its network in Haiti to full capacity.

Seventy percent of the network's cell sites are on air and Digicel is working on restoring service to the remaining 30 percent.

An assessment of what network equipment is required has been completed and new equipment has been ordered and is en route to Haiti.

Digicel has donated $5 million directly to non-governmental organisations working in the disaster zone, as well as setting up the Digicel Haiti Relief Fund.

By Friday evening — just two days after it went live — $300,000 was donated by Digicel customers across its 32 markets worldwide, which include Bermuda.

In addition to previous aid drops over the last five days, Digicel has assembled a 110,000-pound cargo of medical supplies, food and water ready to go to Haiti from Jamaica.
