Village excited to be joining Corona League
North Village will be the 12th team in the Corona League for the 2010/11 football season after the league's hierarchy agreed to add one more team for the upcoming season.
Village, who won the BFA Masters League last term, and include the side's former stars such as Elliott Jennings, Steve Coddington and Tillman Darrell will ensure that no teams have a bye this year.
Corona League president Mike McGrath and North Village president Shervin Dill were both pleased with the introduction of the new boys who will bring their own pedigree and spice to the league.
"I would like to introduce to you all the latest club to join the Corona League, North Village Community Club who will be introducing the Rams into the League," said McGrath.
"After the first season of the Corona League there was a lot of interest from clubs and new teams but at the AGM for the league it was decided that we could only expand by one team this season and North Village brought the excitement and community spirit that the Corona League likes to promote.
"This season is set to be bigger and better than our first season with more teams and more attractions for the family of spectators that enjoys the Corona league.
"It was very pleasing for everyone involved in the league that the only complaint from last season was that they missed playing when they had a bye week."
Dill said that the league was seen as more competitive than the Masters League currently run by the Bermuda Football Association, and gave his team an opportunity to play more games.
"The main factor was that the NVCC Masters team, having won the league title in BFA Masters Division last season, wanted to play in a more competitive league this season," said Dill.
"Last season with the BFA it was felt that there were not enough games played and the schedule was inconsistent at best. It is hoped that in the future we will be able to field a team perhaps in both the Masters and Corona League.
"The Corona league from observation was well organised, BAA was the perfect venue and it appeared to be a very competitive league.
"Our expectations are to have fun enjoy the game and be there to compete for the honours. We may have a few surprises in our roster."
The season is set to kick off with a six-a side tournament at Shelly Bay on September 18th before the reigning champions Tuff Dogs entertain MR Onions at 6.30 p.m. on Friday 24th, when the league kicks off at BAA Field.
The Bistro Cup remains in place along with the Christmas break, while Docksiders will be the official sponsor of the end of season All-Star game.
"To make it easier for the teams, Friday's games will now kick off at 6.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. and with the 12th team joining the league Saturday sees the addition of the 7 p.m. kick off, giving Saturday 1pm, 3pm, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. kick offs," continued McGrath.
"We have a break for Christmas and then carry on until the final league weekend on April 1st which will produce the second team name to be added to the Corona League Cup."
