Minister upbeat on plan for police
Minister of National Security David Burch told senior police officials that he is working hard to represent the Bermuda Police Service in this year’s budgeting process. The Minister, along with Governor Sir Richard Gozney, visited the senior command and management team of the Police Service during a two-day retreat last week organised to prepare the Annual Policing Plan for 2011.The plan, which comes into effect on April 1, is intended to identify the operational priorities for the next year, determining where resources are deployed and where funding will be spent.Sen Burch said the exercise demonstrated the service’s efforts to have collaborative and strategic discussions about how to tackle the rise in violent behavior. On the second day of the meeting, last Friday, 29-year-old construction worker Colford Ferguson became the most recent victim of gun violence on the Island after he was fatally shot in Somerset.“In recent days, we’ve witnessed the tragedy of another murder due to gun violence,” Sen Burch said. “So I was heartened at the fact that officers at all levels were engaged and committed to enacting tangible solutions that will ultimately protect our communities.”The plan will be published in March as a collaborative statement by the Governor, the Minister and the Commissioner of Police.lUseful Websites: www.gov.bm, www.bps.bm.
