Fine, suspended sentence for woman who drove without a licence
A woman with a bad leg drove her car to the doctor's despite being banned from the road but got caught and threatened with jail.
Mary Johnson, 52, was twice caught by the Police flouting her ban on Curving Avenue on June 6, and Vesey Street on June 24.
She was originally banned from the roads for six months on April 22 due to accumulating demerit points for various driving offences.
Johnson pleaded guilty at Magistrates' Court to two counts of driving while disqualified.
However, she appeared in court limping heavily and with a bandage on her leg, claiming she needed the car for medical appointments.
"I couldn't find no other persons to carry me. No taxis. I couldn't walk," she protested to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.
She then started crying and asked to sit down, complaining her injury hurt.
Mr. Warner allowed her to sit, but showed no other sympathy, and told her she had shown "utter contempt for this court, as shown by your attitude here today".
He added: "Tell me why I shouldn't jail you? I can send you to Westgate or wherever they send females and you can get some rest for your leg and all the best treatment. Because you feel you can do what you want.
"It's not a dire emergency where you've got to get to hospital in an emergency."
A sobbing Johnson replied: "Please forgive me for my ignorance and give me one more chance, please."
Mr. Warner eventually handed her a three-month prison term, but suspended for two years. That means she will not have to serve time behind bars unless she gets into further trouble during that period.
He also meted out $400 in fines and a further 12-month driving ban.
