Youngsters learn skills samba style

Bermuda's Brazilian Soccer School's CEO Cal Blankendal hailed the school's first camp as a huge success after more than 80 children turned out for the week-long event at BAA Field.

Among the activities set out for the youngsters were designed ball skill drills along with daily life skills presentationed by the coaches.

The youngsters were also taught various training methods and dribbling skills, perfected by the likes of Robinho and Ronaldo. On the final day, each player had to show their parent/guardian what they had learned and the finale saw Somerset Trojans' first team winger Tahj Wade perform a samba skills exhibition.

After reviewing the inaugural camp, Blankendal was pleased with the response and said that the school would host another camp after requests from parents who were delighted with the event.

"The camp was first class," said Blankendal. "It was the first camp for the Brazilian soccer school . . . 89 kids participated.

"We had an overseas coach to come in and help with the Brazilian training methodology.

"The parents were extremely helpful and were quite surprised to see how the kids got along when you gave them practical things to do.

"They were so excited to have a refreshing and new style of drills instead of the same traditional passing back and forth like the other camps that are put on by various organisations and clubs.

"Since the mid-term camp has ended, we have been getting requests to hold a Christmas camp and will accommodate such requests.

"It was just great to have so many kids from different backgrounds and schools getting involved and learning the sport underneath one umbrella."

The next camp will run from December 21 to 24 at BAA Field.
