Market Nights cancelled

Market Nights in St. George's were cancelled this week because the town's first cruise ship of the season heading straight to Hamilton.

The Veendam was due to stop in St. George's on Tuesday and anchor at Murray's Anchorage and tender passengers to the town.

However, unsettled weather conditions caused the ship to go straight to Hamilton, docking on Front Street. It was originally scheduled to go to Hamilton yesterday and leave tomorrow morning.

Mayor of St. George's Kenny Bascome said he was disappointed Tuesday's Market Nights — the town's version of Harbour Nights — was cancelled because the community would have come out along with the cruise ship passengers.

Mr. Bascome said the chairperson of the activities board was overseas and her deputy decided to cancel the event.

"I believe we should have still had it," he said. "The chairperson is away and when she comes back, we will sit and have some discussions."

Market Nights is scheduled to begin next Tuesday in King Square.

'Great debate' set

The finals of the "Great Debate" will take place tomorrow at the Heritage Worship Centre, on Dundonald Street.

The competition is being put on by the Parliamentary Registrar's Office in conjunction with the Dynamic Debaters and Learners.

According to a press statement, organisers of the event hope to raise the discussion among young people on the importance of being a part of the electoral process, and why having a voice and a vote is critical to ensuring that the democratic process in Bermuda is sustained.

Tomorrow's final will start at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. For more information call 298-7166.
