Radio docudrama to highlight dock strike
Fifty years after the 1959 dock strike, a docudrama about the moment in the Island's history will air on the radio tomorrow.
The docudrama, performed by Wendy Davis-Johnson and Leo Mills, will be followed by a panel discussion about the historic event with Senator Walton Brown and MP Mark Pettingill.
In September 1959, a dock workers' strike was called to end "luck of the draw" employment. While the Theatre Boycott earlier that summer ended peacefully, the dock strike culminated with the dock workers wielding home-made weapons as they were confronted by the Police Riot Squad on Front Street.
The incident ended without violence, largely due to the intervention of mediators.
The presentation, planned by Imagine Bermuda, begins at noon on ZBM FM 89.
Forum will focus on race from a religious perspective
A forum aiming to look at race relations from a religious perspective will be held at Cathedral Hall on Friday.
Organised by Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB) and Faith Venture 2009, the forum will begin with a presentation by Margaret Sentamu, the wife of the Archbishop of York, Reverend John Sentamu.
CURB president Lynne Winfield said that she hoped the event would help the Island move forward. "We hope this forum will provide an opportunity for reflection on our past and reconciliation for the future, and will allow people to express their own personal experiences and learn from each other," she said.
The forum runs from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
