Memorial service for Barbados' Prime Minister

Barbados' Prime Minister David Thompson is seen attending a welcoming ceremony in Havana, Cuba in May 2009. Thompson died on Saturday from panceatic cancer at age 48.

The Barbados Association of Bermuda will be holding a memorial service on Saturday for their late Prime Minister David Thompson.

The service will take place at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity on Church Street in Hamilton at 6 p.m. It will honour the life of Mr. Thompson who died two weeks ago from pancreatic cancer, at age 48.

According to Rudolph Alleyne, President of the Barbados Association of Bermuda, anyone with a connection to Barbados is invited to attend.

The short service will include a few speakers, prayers and songs of praise in remembrance of the "intelligent", "approachable" and "unassuming" leader.

It will also give people on the Island a chance to pay their respects to Mr Thompson, who died just over a year after being diagnosed with the disease.

Mr Alleyne encouraged the public to attend and said: "I think he was one of the youngest and brightest minds in the Caribbean. It was a sad loss even though we knew he wasn't well. The Barbados community here was constantly hoping for his recovery and offering our prayers to him and his family.

"He just became prime minister two years ago and wasn't able to fulfil his dream for Barbados and the Caribbean as a whole and it was really heart-wrenching that he wasn't able to reach his full potential.

"I think one of the things people will remember about him was his calm demeanour and the way he dealt with situations. He wasn't easily rattled and he always had a solution to any problem that was presented. I think that is one of the things we will miss about him."
