Two-goal Goater scares Saints
City caused Premier League Southampton a late scare in the second leg of their League Cup match at the Dell last night.
Goater struck in the 76th and 82nd minutes to send the match into extra time at 3-3 after the home side had opened a seemingly unassailable 3-1 lead.
But the south coast team regained the advantage early in the additional period through Dean Richards, who scored his first goal since a move from Wolves, and held on to make it into the third round.
Paul Dickov had given City the lead on 11 minutes -- the first goal in the tie after a 0-0 draw in the first leg at Maine Road -- before Southampton levelled with a Jason Dodds penalty in the 15th. Matthew Oakley then scored twice either side of the interval to leave the City fans in silence.
But then Goater stepped up, first in the 74th minute failing to put away a golden opportunity when right through, then two minutes later firing in his first after a rebound from a free kick.
In the 82nd minute, the striker who scored the winner against Walsall on Saturday, made it three in two games to send City fans into ecstasy.
Saints sub Matthew Le Tissier thought he had won it moments from the end of normal time but his effort was ruled offside by the tiniest of margins.
Shawn Goater: struck two goals in the space of six minutes.
