Lightbourne goal counts for nothing

the FA Cup with his 12th goal of the season last night...before floodlight failure at Turf Moor gave the home team a lifeline.

Lightbourne's eighth minute goal will count for nothing because the match was abandoned by the referee when the lights failed during the half-time break.

Frantic efforts to restore power failed and the ref was left with no option but to call the game off, much to the dismay of Walsall's travelling supporters.

Now Walsall will have to make another trip to Burnley to settle the second round replay, with the eventual winners facing a tough but potentially lucrative away match against cup favourites and new league leaders Liverpool.

Lightbourne had scored Walsall's 90th minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Burnley two weeks ago.

Shawn Goater's team, Bristol City, were charged by the English Football Association yesterday with failing to control spectators following crowd violence at Sunday's Second Division derby with Bristol Rovers.

Rovers players were reportedly assaulted when supporters ran onto the pitch immediately after the final whistle and chased them as they raced to the dressing room. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after Rovers snatched an injury-time equaliser.
