Swan to rescue for Blazers at the death
Somerset Eagles 1 –Boulevard Blazers 2
Two first-half goals by Ajani Gibbons and Temiko Wilson were sufficient to send Boulevard Blazers into the next round of the FA Cup at White Hill field yesterday.
But they had goalkeeper Sheljuan Swan to thank for preventing the game from going into extra time when he pulled off a sensational save to block Shakir Smith's shot deep into injury time as Somerset Eagles piled forward in search of the equaliser.
Had Eagles scored then it would have given them a deserved goal because they were able to rouse themselves in the second half after falling behind 2-0 early in the contest with Gibbons scoring after four minutes and Wilson ten minutes later.
Eagles' centre-back Tyrone Fubler fouled Jason Davis which led to the early penalty, Gibbons slamming the ball home from the penalty spot. Then Wilson coolly added the second when he brilliantly dribbled around Fubler before slotting the ball home from an angle 12 yards out on the left flank.
However, Eagles were far from rattled by the two-goal deficit as they fought back and came into the game with more and more momentum for the rest of the half , turning up the heat on their opponents.
Daren Dowling eventually made the breakthrough, when he rose majestically to head home a corner taken by Shakir Smith after 17 minutes. And, with Boulevard fading and Eagels looking the livelier of the two, an equaliser always looked to be coming.
Yet it was Boulevard who came closer to scoring, when Temiko Wilson hit the post from close range moments before half time. However, Eagles responded within seconds with Dowling on a breakaway watching in agony as his shot struck the advancing goalkeeper Swan.
The excitment of the first half failed to materialise after the break, and although Eagles clearly dominated the early stages, they were unable to create any clear-cut scoring chances. Boulevard meanwhile lacked any real immagination going forward.
But the visitors scared the home side after 65 minutes when Jason Davis broke through the defence but the breakaway failed to produce a third goal as he rounded Lorenzo Burch in the Eagles goal only to fire his shot against the post.
The game deteriorated for a long spell after that, with neither attack looking sharp, but Eagles were always looking capable of being the first to come out of the doldrums.
Shakir Smith was the forward who was in position to put the scores equal after 88 minutes but his shot from 15 yards sailed inches wide when he should have scored.
He followed this up with another miss, but this one he wasn't totally at blame because goalkeeper Swan came through with some heroics by blocking the shot with his legs as he fell to the ground.
