Coach Gibbons spoilt for choice
posts in different parts of the world -- one in England with his current club, Wycombe House, and the other in Soweto, South Africa with Napilia Cricket Club.
The veteran Bailey's Bay and former Bermuda national team all-rounder has been given until the end of the year to make his decision, although he says he will decide long before then.
"It so happens that both positions have come up at the same time,'' said Gibbons yesterday.
"It's good to be wanted by both clubs but I can't do both jobs and I will have to determine which one to choose within the next few weeks.'' Gibbons, who remains in England to conduct negotiations, was in South Africa three weeks ago where he virtually assured Napilia that he would accept their offer.
While there Gibbons and Englishman Ben Taylor, the former Hampshire player, discussed the club's coaching position and both were expected to take up the offer next June, coaching and playing. Fearing that they would be losing a player of Gibbons' stature, Wycombe House consequently made a more lucrative offer.
"It was a good one. They want to make me director of cricket at the club where I would be responsible for all phases of development,'' explained Gibbons.
"It certainly is a very interesting offer and is something that will warrant some serious consideration.
"But South Africa remains my first choice at this time, although it's far from being settled. My current club have given me until the end of the year to decide but I owe it to Napilia to make a decision as soon as possible, one way or the other.'' Whatever Gibbons does decide his ultimate goal is to return to Bermuda eventually and get involved with a development programme organised either by Bermuda Cricket Board of Control of Government.
"That is my long-term goal. I've always wanted to coach at a national level at home and for somebody who has got so much out of this lovely sport of cricket, it is my dream to put something back into it in the form of coaching youngsters,'' he said.
