A follow-up on her first talk on the great impressionist, Mrs. Cooper's talk should whet appetites for the Gallery's projected visit to Chicago in November.

Billed as the biggest and best Claude Monet Retrospective ever assembled, the Art Institute of Chicago is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the very first Monet museum exhibition (which was also held there) with a show that will gather together 159 of his works.

It was one of Monet's paintings, entitled "Impression: Sunrise'', that gave France's 19th century group of plein air painters, the name of "impressionists''. These consisted mainly of Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and Degas.

Ever absorbed by colour and the effect of light, Monet (1840-1926) is especially famous for his "series'' pictures, which feature the same subjects, such as haystacks or Rouen Cathedral, at different times of day and in different lights. The most famous series is that of his Water-lilies which he painted over and over again in his garden at Giverny. The Chicago show will include no fewer than 31 of these studies.

The aim of the show, say organisers, is to emphasise Monet's influence, not just on late 19th century art, but on the revolutionary concepts that were to evolve in the 20th century.

The Gallery's Monet trip will be escorted by Mrs. Bonnie Dodwell and art historian Dr. Francis Broun will, once again, be on hand to guide the Bermuda group around that exhibition and other Chicago museums.

"Our group will be given a private tour of the Monet Retrospective,'' says Mrs. Dodwell. "This is a huge plus for a show on this scale. Several people from Bermuda have already visited the exhibition and have said that it was almost a waste of time as everyone was hurried through in lines.'' The tour package, arranged by Meyer Agencies, is from November 20-25 and includes air fare, five nights accommodation, sightseeing, including as well as a special Thanksgiving Dinner. Telephone Mrs. Dodwell at the Bermuda National Gallery (295-9428) for further details.

Mrs. Cooper's lecture begins promptly at 12.30 p.m. and, as usual, she emphasises that "brown-bag lunches'' are welcome. Admission at the door ($10 and $5 for members).
