Foundation give $100,000 boost to scholarship fund
The Bermuda High School/Saltus Scholarship Fund can now finance an additional $100,000 in scholarships following a generous grant from the Starr Foundation.
This latest gift brings the Fund's total endowments to $400,000. The scholarship scheme, which was established by American International chairman Mr. Ernest Stempl in 1990, gives qualified but financially needy students the opportunity to pursue their secondary studies at Saltus or the Bermuda High School.
Mr. Stempl, who is also a Starr Foundation trustee, said the awards helped to ensure a greater cross-section of students at the two private institutions.
Each year at least two students are awarded the scholarship, which covers 80 percent of their annual tuition fees for five years.
Recipients are chosen on the basis of their financial need, effort, and academic commitment or performance. All candidates have to sit for the schools' entrance exams and be interviewed by the Directors of the Foundation.
Applicants can contact the principal of BHS, Mr. Jack Wright, or the headmaster of Saltus, Mr. Keith MacPhee, for further information.
