Sir John still keen to run airport restaurant
Former Premier Sir John Swan is still interested in operating an Airport restaurant despite having his bid to open a McDonald's blocked, it has emerged.
Transport Minister Wayne Furbert last night confirmed he was in talks with Grape Bay Ltd, which is operated by Sir John and fellow UBP MP Maxwell Burgess, about operating concessions.
"There are on-going discussions with Grape Bay Ltd. They are interested in operating something at the Airport,'' said Mr. Furbert.
Grape Bay was recommended to run the food and drinks concessions at the Airport and was set to open a McDonald's restaurant.
However the bid was halted by the Prohibited Restaurant Bill which outlawed fast food franchises, including McDonald's.
The Bill is due to receive its third and last reading in the House of Assembly in June and seems certain to become law.
The Progressive Labour Party has indicated it will continue to support the Bill and members of the so-called "People's Five'' will vote in its favour despite three of the five being back in the UBP fold as Ministers.
It is hoped that work on the concessions areas at the Airport will be completed by the end of May.
However no lease has yet been laid before the House of Assembly for Grape Bay's plans and MPs will soon be tied up debating the Budget, which will be revealed next Wednesday.
If Grape Bay decides to pull out, the concessions will have to be re-tendered and new leases drawn up, possibly delaying the development of food and drink outlets at the Airport.
Last night Mr. Furbert declined to specify the nature of Grape Bay's plans, although it is understood it can only operate a restaurant.
It is also understood the matter was discussed by Cabinet yesterday after receiving a reply from Grape Bay about the Airport concessions.
The Minister added: "There are discussions taking place with Grape Bay and I realise that timing is a factor and becoming more of a factor.
"The only thing they can operate is a restaurant and hopefully a conclusion will be reached soon, one way or the other.'' Neither Sir John or Mr. Burgess were available for comment last night.
