Seniors on a high in Colorado

Gosling and Jim Todd distinguished themselves at high altitude in Colorado when they won the Belgium Trophy in the team championship of the World Seniors Championships.

The team, led by captain Gosling, competed last week at the world famous Broadmoor Golf Club at 6,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains along with 20 other nations, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Channel Islands, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Netherland, South Africa, Phillipines, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil.

There was two days of competition, with Australia winning the first day and Bermuda the second day by four strokes after three best net scores of 74, 72, 76. The United States were the overall team winners.

In the individual tournament, Jim Todd won the Brown Flight for 8-15 handicappers, Coles Diel the Tutt Flight consolation for the same handicaps while Tom Wilding reached the semi-final of the Evens Flight for 12-18 handicappers.

Wilding was denied victory on the 18th green when his opponent from the Channel Islands sank a 30-yard putt. With the pressure on, Wilding missed his putt from four feet to halve the hole.

"I was so shattered by him sinking his putt that I missed mine,'' said Wilding.

"Two years we won the first day of the team championship, which we thought was fantastic and this time we won the second day, so we're going to try to put them both together. We've been trying for 25 to 30 years to win this and we've now won both individual days.

"The Americans are fantastic, all their players are scratch players and they did play well.''
