Youngsters hine in Ohio tourney
Junior Golf Association of American's Tournament of Champions in Alliance, Ohio.
The 54-hole event began yesterday and two of the three divisions are being led by Bermudians, with Chris Garland leading the way in the College Division and Robbie Spurling setting the early pace in the boys 14-15 age group with two others, Michael Sims and Quinton Sherlock in the top five going into tomorrow's second round.
Garland shot a five-over-par 77 in hte 18-21 age group to take a one-stroke lead over Mike Porterfield of Ohio.
Spurling is two shots ahead of H.J. Lingerfield, also of Ohio, in the 14-15 age group following his opening round of 77. Fellow Bermudians, Sims and Sherlock, are in third and fourth places following their rounds of 82 and 83 respectively.
In the boys 16-17 Steven Carruthers shot an opening round of 83 which places him ninth overall. The leader of that group is Robert Burgess of Canada whose 74 was the best round of the day.
Youngsters from the United States and Canada are competing in the tournament which finishes tomorrow.
