Swimmers add three more gold
Swimming Championships in Aruba, seizing three more gold medals late on Sunday night to go with the two already bagged.
Graham Smith, who had earlier won gold in the 100 metres breaststroke, added to his gleaming collection after literally leaving the field in his wake during the 200 metre breaststroke final for 15-17 year-olds. Along the way Smith established a new age group record of two minutes 27.39 seconds, while lowering his morning `C' time by more than three seconds.
Probably the most exciting event of the evening saw Anastasia Lau just managing to hold on for the win in the 100 metres breaststroke among the 11-12 age group. Lau set a personal best of 1:19.92 in the process and more than made up for her earlier fifth place finish in the 200 metres.
As expected Ronald Cowen touched the wall first in the 18-21 100 metres freestyle in 54.51, outside the Olympic qualifying time. The relatively slow time was put down to the fact that there was an earlier false start.
Understandably pleased with the showings was national coach Richard Goodwin.
"I'm very happy, elated, delighted, whatever superlative you choose will fit,'' Goodwin gushed. "This has been an excellent performance.
"The team is running on an emotional high at the moment. They're all swimming well and gelling nicely as a team. They're very much on the up.'' Another solid performance came from Kiera Aitken, who set a new national record of 2:18.67 in the 200 metres freestyle, breaking the mark she set earlier in the day (2:19.37).
Meanwhile, Flora Duffy's 1:05.53 100 freestyle was good enough for fifth in the 11-12 age group.
Late last night Bermuda's Jessica Sousa was set to challenge for honours in the backstroke, and Duffy was again in the water for the 200 freestyle.
Bermuda also had representation in the 15-17 relay competition for boys and girls.
