Heritage Day celebrations

and Police would like to advise the public of the following routes that will be used and the diversions to traffic that will result.

Sinclair Packwood Memorial Cycle Race.

The race starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow with approximately 50 cyclists travelling from Somerset Village to Cedar Avenue in Pembroke.

The cyclists will start just south of Gilbert Lane on Somerset Road in Sandys.

When they have passed Hog Bay Level, a group of inline skaters will start a race (at approximately 9.25 a.m.) which will follow the same route as that of the contestants in the Marathon Derby until they reach the junction of Church Street and Cedar Avenue where they will head north on Cedar Avenue to finish near the junction of Angle Street.

The Marathon Derby.

The race starts at 9.30 a.m. from the junction of Somerset Road and Cambridge Road in Sandys.

The route takes the runners south on Somerset Road, across Somerset Bridge, over Bridge Hill and then east on Middle Road to Burnt House Hill in Warwick.

Runners then head east on Harbour Road to Crow Lane, where they turn west to run along Front Street to the junction with Queen Street. They turn up Queen Street and then had west on Victoria Street to Cedar Avenue where they head north.

At Marsh Folly Road the runners turn east, then south on Dutton Avenue to finish at Bernard's Park.

Junior Classic Race.

This will start at the Cenotaph at 9.35 a.m. and head west on Front Street, north on Queen Street and east on Church Street.

The juniors turn north on King Street and west on Victoria Street, then north on Cedar Avenue.

After turning east on Marsh Folly Road the runners will head south on Dutton Avenue and finish the race at Bernard's Park.

Heritage Day Parade.

A small parade will leave the Transport Control Department's parking area at 12.15 p.m. and travel west on North Street, then turn right into Dutton Avenue and into Bernard Park via the south gate.

Bands and some 1,000 children will participate and the ceremonies are expected to last about 30 minutes.

Premier Jennifer Smith is due to arrive at 12.10 p.m. at Bernard Park.

At 2 p.m., the full Heritage Parade, which will include gombeys, majorettes, floats, roller skaters, bands and groups of costumed persons, will start on the junction of Church Street and Par-La-Ville Road.

They will head east on Church Street, turn right onto Queen Street, then left on to Front Street and head east to Court Street, where it will turn left and head up to Church Street.

It will turn there and head west to Cedar Avenue, turn right and head north until Marsh Folly Road where it will turn right again.

From there it will turn right onto Dutton Avenue and finish at Bernard's Park.

Ambulance. The St. John's Ambulance Brigade will have a first aid tent located at Bernard's Park which will maintain radio contact with its ambulances.

There will be two ambulances on the race route.

During the parade, there will be an ambulance stationed at the junction of Reid Street and Parliament Street, with one remaining mobile.

Traffic Diversions All west bound traffic entering the City of Hamilton along Crow Lane, Middle Road, Cavendish Road, Palmetto Road and Blackwatch Pass will be diverted to avoid the parade route.
