Association launches appeal for second mammography unit
With its newest mammography machine meeting high expectations, the TB Cancer & Health Association has launched a fund raising appeal for a second one.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month last October, the organisation was able to raise most of the money for the machine which was purchased to replace an older one.
Boasting the latest technology, the $65,000 unit allows the facility to test between 30 and 34 women a day -- almost double what it could before.
And the waiting period for a mammogram has also decreased from one week to a couple of days or no more than 24 hours in an emergency. TB Cancer & Health director of public relations Teresa Cameron said women between the ages of 35 and 40 should make appointments for baseline mammograms, having one every year thereafter.
This procedure makes it easier for radiographers to compare annual results and detect breast cancer before it is too late.
Pointing out that TB Cancer & Health was the only facility on the Island which offered next day results, Mrs. Cameron, during a press conference yesterday, said: "It is our aim to continue to be the leader in mammography, bringing to Bermuda the latest technology and equipment.
"Due to the fact that this new machine is far superior to any on the Island, it is our wish to purchase a second new machine which is of great benefit to the women of Bermuda.'' To complement the new machine, TB Cancer & Health has enhanced its mammography department to accommodate the two machines as well as a three-room changing area for clients.
Dr. Homer will be giving a breast cancer talk and slide show presentation for women of all ages on Thursday at St. Paul's Church Hall, beginning at 7.30 p.m.
