Swimmer Hammond sets new age group record

following yesterday's heats at the Central American and Caribbean Age Group championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Matthew Hammond achieved the fastest qualifying place in the 13-14 200 metres backstroke final. His time of 2:23.68 sliced a huge six seconds off his previous best long course time and set a new age group record.

Stephen Troake also had an excellent swim, his time of 2:27.57 taking three seconds off his previous personal best and earning him sixth place in the final.

Nuri Lathan had a very strong swim in the 11-12 100 metres breaststroke and posted a very creditable time of 1:22.10, giving him the sixth fastest qualifying time in last night's final.

Bermuda's other individual finalist was Craig Roberts, swimming in the 18-21 200 metres breaststroke.

The boys 13-14 medley relay team of Hammond (back), Trevor Nelson (breast), Ronald Cowen (fly) and Troake (free) is a strong team and a good performance was expected.

In the finals on the first day, Nelson placed fourth with a personal best time of 1:10.88 in the 13-14 100 metres breaststroke and Fahy placed sixth in the final of the 15-17 200 metres butterfly.

Nelson, Troake, Lathan and Paul Fox all competed in the 50 free of yesterday's preliminaries with Lathan also swimming in the 200 breast while Fahy and Ferguson swam in the 200 free.

Troake also had an excellent swim in the 13-14 100 metres freestyle with a time of 58:12, placing him ninth and missing the final by just one-tenth of a second.
