Bermuda bombed in opener

which ravaged the home team during last night's second match of the Bermuda Football Association International Youth tournament.

A hat-trick from striker Jason Alvarez along with a single tally from Alfredo Valente highlighted a 4-1 win by the visitors, who out-hustled, out-manoeuvred, overran and were more disciplined than their Bermudian counterparts.

The initial 15 minutes, however, witnessed Bermuda holding their own and able to match the Canadians, with Joey Rego a tower of strength at the back and Jelani Scott making his presence felt in midfield.

But early promise served to deceive and the Canadians gradually wore down the defensive guard, creating cracks which later became massive openings for attackers to wade through.

Yet it was not until the 41st minute that a breakthrough was achieved and on hand to apply the finishing touches was Alvarez.

The play was created by Andrew Hooker, who flashed down the right wing and found a wide open Alvarez just inside the penalty area.

Awakened by the strike, Bermuda responded with a near miss a minute later, as captain John Barry Nusum rocketed a 25-yard free-kick inches beyond the far post.

Any thoughts of a comeback during the second half were erased four minutes following the restart, as Valente slotted home a right wing cross from Greg Campbell after a throw in.

Then came a four-minute period Bermuda defender Sean Simmons would dearly love to forget, one in which he surrendered two penalties that resulted in goals.

Simmons was first whistled for upending Rob Russiero in the 60th minute and in the 64th he ruthlessly cut down Tim Taylor, charging towards goal. Alvarez converted both opportunities.

Sandwiched in between the spot kicks was Bermuda's lone offering, as Rego drove home a freekick, the ball taking a slight deflection off a defender along the way.

Glasgow Rangers 2, USA 1 Goals early in the first and second half earned Scotland's Glasgow Rangers victory in the opening game as the United States were let down by poor finishing.

In between the Rangers goals in the 15th and 47th minutes, the USA Olympic development team looked the better team but failed to find the net until they had gone two down in the second half.

After US fullback Kevin Knott had a shot blocked inside the box for a corner, from which he headed over the bar, Rangers hit back to take the lead a minute later when Paul McHale converted a cross from the left by Steven McAdam.

Gradually the heat seemed to have an effect on the Scots as the US began to look the more fluent team, with Matthew Rosso busy on the right flank.

A couple of minutes later Sean Kelty went on a strong run down the flank and crossed to the far post where Tony Miceli knocked it back and Schultz had his effort blocked.

Those misses enabled Glasgow to take a slim lead into the break and just two minutes after the restart a revived Rangers doubled their lead when Pablo Webster turned the ball into his own net.

As the shadows covered the pitch and the temperature dropped Glasgow kicked into overdrive. And with the US equally determined the game rose to a new level with Andrew Harrow going close to making it 3-0.

The Americans finally found the net in the 66th minute when Schultz scored from close range following a freekick on the right side.
