A number of ponies found the heavy conditions to their liking on a newly-surfaced track at Vesey Street as the harness racing season got underway

Junior Meteau Design, Samantha Hayward's veteran stallion, was one of them as he won both heats of the 1:14.2-1:12.2 time bar in 1:11 and a fast 1:09.4 and will now move up to the next time bar.

Another performance of 1:09.4 and faster will put him in the Free For All.

Tom Matthews' Catch A Fire made a strong return to the track after a three year absence, winning both heats in the 1:14.2-1:12.2 B Division.

And LA Erma Time, a four-year-old black mare, celebrated her Bermuda debut by winning her first heat in 1:12.2 In her second heat she was just nosed out by Direct Toy Boy with a time of 1:14 against 1:14.1 There were five entries in the Free For All (1:09.4 and faster) with Custom Eyes'D, driven by Shoron Hunt, taking both heats in the A Division while Grand Shady, with Michael DeCosta, and Eddie Roque's Shamrock Formal Attire shared honours with one win apiece in the B Division.

Next race day is planned for Sunday, October 17, starting at 1.00 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY CC Cross-country continues at Spittal Pond today with the first-ever evening races in the annual series.

Because of the threat of fading light, organisers have stressed that the event will begin at 6.00 p.m. sharp for both juniors and seniors.

This evening's races will be the third in the current Minute Maid series following events at the Arboretum and Chaplin Bay.

Kavin Smith and Anna Eatherley have won both of the respective senior men's and women's races in a programme which will determine teams to be selected for the CAC cross country championships, tentatively planned for Colombia next February.

Further races are planned for Fort Scaur at 9.00 a.m. on October 23 and at Astwood Park at 9.00 a.m. on November 6, followed by the national championships on November 20 at a venue still to be decided.
