Affiliates put off soccer revisions

Football Association to go back to the drawing board with plans to restructure the sport on the Island.

Last night's meeting at Social Club, adjourned from March 9, produced little progress after nearly two hours of debating and was adjourned once again -- this time until July 22.

The BFA are to then return with the complete package of recommendations to be voted upon -- recommendations that were previously put forward to affiliates on March 9.

One of those will see the governing body contact Commercial League teams that have no affiliation in order to get their views on a revised league structure that calls for them to either compete in a proposed new Second Division or a Veteran's Division.

This matter preoccupied last night's meeting, with more sensitive subjects, such as the revision of the two top leagues being renamed the Premier and First Division being reduced to eight teams, ignored.

A frustrated BFA president Neville Tyrrell was himself taken back when the affiliates sought to debate the inclusion of input from Commercial League sides.

"Yes, it was surprising for them to put most of the time on this matter; obviously they have concern for the Commercial League teams. It could be that maybe they are satisfied with the other recommendations that we have drawn up for the makeup of the Premier, First and Second Division. I have to assume that they are happy with it,'' he said.

"The main concern of affiliates appeared to be that the existing Commercial Division clubs that do not have representation on the floor here may not have been consulted and may disagree or agree with the recommendations ... and they want to know.''
