Project to clean up Bermuda's buses
Junior Chamber, the organisation has taken on the task of cleaning some of our public buses.
And that means getting out the buckets of water, sponges, mops and scouring powder as members will also attempt to remove graffiti.
The fundraising event, which is called Operation Sunny Bus will take place this Sunday.
Marketing committee member for the Bermuda Junior Chamber Devonna Robinson said: "Operation Sunny Bus is a project by the Bermuda Junior Chamber which entails cleaning a number of Bermuda's public buses in order to raise awareness of our organisation and also the availability of the bus system for not only locals but visitors alike.
"It is our objective to raise funds through sponsorship from companies in Bermuda and we intend to donate some proceeds to our adopted charity the Sunshine League, a home to some of Bermuda's young people.'' Miss Robinson added that the cleaning of Bermuda's public buses includes cleaning the exterior and interior.
"We chose to do it because we thought it would be a high profile community project which would benefit both ourselves as far as marketing the Bermuda Junior Chamber and it also helps out the community in making them aware of how comfortable a ride aboard a public bus can be.
"And we wanted the tourists to see that our public buses can be very clean and suitable for transport around the Island while on their vacation.'' Miss Robinson said in order to raise money the chamber has sent out sponsorship letters to a number of companies in Bermuda providing them with information on the project and asking them for their support in their endeavour to raise funds for the aid of Operation Sunny Bus and the Sunshine League.
The idea for Operation Sunny Bus came from treasurer of the Junior Chamber Bill Ingham.
He said: "I thought it would capture the imagination and it was something that had not been done before. I thought it would get people interested in our organisation as well as raise funds for a good cause.
"This year I am the national treasurer for the Junior Chamber and this whole project fits neatly into what we are trying to achieve which raising the awareness and at the same time raise money for a good cause.'' Mr. Ingham added that there are a number of members who are keen on the Sunshine League, which just went through a major revamping, "and we just want to help them out.'' He said the group will clean a number of buses, which they expect will be four or five.
"Since the conception of the idea I have heard people ask why are we doing this because the Government is suppose to clean the buses but I'd like to think we are all part of the Government.
"The Transportation Department is a separate organisation and they do a good job. We have gone up to see how they clean the buses and it is very manual, very basic.'' The Bermuda Junior Chamber will be in the Number One shed parking area this Sunday at 2 p.m. "The buses will be left there for a number of hours and we will wash and wax them and try to clean off the graffiti inside the bus, once we have completed this task the Transportation Department will arrange for persons to return the buses,'' Miss Robinson said. The Bermuda Junior Chamber was established in 1952 and it has seen members from all areas of Bermuda including some popular faces.
It has four sections Hamilton Junior Chamber, St. George's, West End and Somers Isle Junior Chamber. The headquarters are located on the Railway Trail in Paget.
