W&E submits plan to put eight prefab homes on Morgan?s Point
The Department of Works and Engineering applied to put eight prefabricated houses on Morgan?s Point on November 7, nine days before Works, Engineering and Housing Minister Lt. Col. David Burch told the Senate the area is ?off limits?.
The Planning application proposes putting eight detached, single story manufactured houses on the site.
The proposed homes have three bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as a kitchen, dining area, living room and utility room. There is also a parking space designated for each of the homes.
Each house has a floor space of 1,232 square feet and meets Federal Mobile Home Construction and Safety standards.
The application said there would not need to be any roads built and named the development a ?temporary housing project?.
On November 16, Senator Burch told the Senate that as Minister he did not believe the Morgan?s Point site should be developed at the moment.
?I will get into hot water for this,? he said. ?At the moment there are all sorts of wonderful plans for Morgan?s Point. As Minister I?ll be putting brakes on that right now.?
Sen. Burch said it was irresponsible to consider building on the land considering there are grave environmental concerns about the area.
The prefabricated houses were initially announced in the 2004 Throne Speech and arrived on the Island in August of 2005.
Though the houses had arrived on the Island the Bermuda Housing Corporation could not figure out where to put them.
Housing Minister at the time, Ashfield DeVent said the initial plan to scatter them around the Island, fell victim to the ?not in my backyard (Nimby)? syndrome.
The Planning Department sent the Department of Works and Engineering a letter yesterday stating that in order for the a detailed appraisal to happen additional information is needed regarding communal garbage disposal for the development.
The Planning Department also asked for a detailed site plan.
A second application was lodged on November 7 to place two prefabricated homes, identical to the ones proposed for Morgan?s Point, on Beacon Hill in Sandy?s, near the Somerset Bus Terminal.
