Swim team blitz record book
the Island swim squad continued to make waves at the CCCAN Championships in Havana, Cuba on Sunday night.
Stephen Fahy, the Bermuda team's most experienced competitor who twice lowered his personal best in the 100 metres freestyle over the weekend, led the charge.
Fahy set a new mark of 57.65 seconds in the 100 metres butterfly final, finishing in fifth place just half a second behind Francisco Sanchez, current world champion in both the 100m and 50m freestyle.
Then the boys 15-17 freestyle relay team of Ronald Cowen, Trevor Nelson, Matthew Hammond and Stephen Troake smashed by two and a half seconds the age group record set last year in Puerto Rico.
The quartet combined for a time of four minutes, 20.16 seconds to finish fifth in the relay final, beating such countries as Mexico, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
Their finishing time left them just one tenth of a second behind the fourth placed team, and Troake's split of 53.10 was the fastest relay time ever by a Bermuda swimmer in that age group.
Hammond continued the record-breaking in the 200m freestyle as he lowered the 15-18 age group mark set by Geri Mewett in Caracas a few years back. His time of 2:00.56 was just 11 hundredths of a second outside the national record set by Mike Cash at the Pan-Am Games in 1991 in the same Havana pool.
Jimmy Pereira also got in the record books with a time of 5:16.30 in the 400 metres individual medley -- an improvement of 20 seconds on his seeded time.
In other finals on Sunday night Alicia Mullan placed fifth in the 200m breaststroke in 2:57.05 while Troake placed eighth in the 15-17 100m freestyle in 54.35.
Yesterday morning saw the boys 15-17 4x100 medley relay team improve their entry time by nine seconds as they clocked 4:12.86 in the heats.
Hammond (backstroke), Nelson (breaststroke), Cowen (butterfly) and Troake (freestyle) were scheduled back in the pool for last night's final.
Also swimming in finals last night were Tamika Williams in the 18-21 200m freestyle and Hammond in the 15-17 200m freestyle.
The meet conmtinues through Friday.
