Clay, Charlie star in opening ICC trial

Clay Smith and captain Albert Steede struck half-centuries as the Vice-President's XI scored a 28-run win at Devonshire Rec. field in the first ICC Trophy trial match on Saturday.

Smith top-scored with 61 and Steede made 51 as the two put on 97 runs for the third wicket in laying the foundation for a huge total.

Smith hit six fours and three sixes and Steede three fours and two sixes as Wendell Smith's side were made to pay for eight missed catches.

Glenn Smith, who had four lives, was not out on 42 while Noel Gibbons made a dashing 39 and opening bat Allen Richardson 27.

Diallo Sharrieff claimed two for 66 for the President's XI, but the pick of the bowlers were Clevie Wade and David Adams who yielded 21 and 35 respectively in their 10-over spells.

The President's XI responded positively with Ricky Hill hitting a scintillating 50 before playing on to a Gibbons delivery that stayed low. Hill crashed eight fours and two sixes in 55 minutes.

Charlie Marshall was left to pick up the slack and he carried his bat for 82 runs, his fifth consecutive innings of 50 or more. Marshall hit six sixes and five fours.

Wendell Smith, who earlier retired because of back pains, returned to make 38, which included five fours and a six.

Bruce Perinchief claimed four for 53 in 10 overs for the Vice-President's side and Gibbons had two for 39. Del Hollis conceded only 23 in his 10 overs.
