Bermuda blasted out of Under-20 World Cup

Bermuda 1 Barbados 5 Bermuda's Under-20 soccer team suffered a 5-1 hammering against Barbados in their CONCACAF Zone Youth World Cup qualifier in Kingston, Jamaica last night.

And after Jamaica's crushing 6-2 victory over Barbados the night before, Bermuda are now out of contention for a spot in the Under-20 World Cup finals which will go to the winner of the three-team group.

Tomorrow night Bermuda face a Jamaica team that Brown describes as "very, very good'' after watching their win over Barbados.

But it is last night's Bermuda performance that gives the coach more to worry about.

"I would say overall we didn't play half as good as we can play,'' said Brown upon returning to the team hotel last night.

Barbados led 2-0 before Clevon Hill got one back for Bermuda just before the half to make it 2-1 at the interval.

"After the first goal against the run of play, instead of getting stuck in we put our heads down, tail between our legs and gave up,'' said Brown, a former international youth team captain himself.

He has vowed to make some changes for the Jamaica match, with pride being all there is left to salvage.

"We're not even talking about winning, just playing for pride and playing how I know we can play,'' said the coach.

"I'm very, very, very disappointed. They not only let the country and the coaches down but let themselves down first. I know they can play a lot better than they played today.

"We'll have to make a few changes because certain people who played today let us down. If you can't do the work on the field, then you'll have to sit down and watch.'' Jay Smith was kept busy in the Bermuda goal as three more goals came in the second half. But Brown stressed that Smith wasn't at fault for any of the goals.

"At this level you pay for mistakes and we made a couple of mistakes today,'' said Brown.

"They were basic errors. As far as talent, we were better but they had more heart than we did.''
